Washington Elementary’s STEAM Family Night Sparks Joy, Creativity & Connection

Washington Elementary School hosted an inspiring and creativity-filled STEAM Family Night on May 8 for over 50 students and family members, who engaged in hands-on science and art activities and celebrated learning through shared experiences.

The evening began with a vibrant embroidery project led by PS ARTS instructors, who guided students and their families to craft symbols representing their favorite memory together using colorful yarn and stitching tools. Washington first-grader Leonardo Jimenez said he wanted to create a sun in the “wrong” colors.

“I’m using salmon red,” Jimenez said. “I love to do art.”

His mother, Wendy Santa Ana, chose to stitch a mountain. She shared how the school’s family events provide her household with valuable time together outside of their home while doing something they can all enjoy.

“I like hanging out with my family a lot, and we’re all together right now,” Santa Ana said. “I also appreciate the school’s reading nights, which have also helped to improve his reading, and we are thankful for that.”

In addition to the arts activity, Washington staff and teachers transformed the school’s blacktop into a hub of scientific exploration. Families participated in engaging activities, including painting, tower building, terrarium creation and interactive experiments, all designed to promote discovery and collaboration through hands-on learning.
