PBIS & SEL at Washington

Building Strong Minds, Kind Hearts, and Safe Spaces for Learning

At Washington Elementary, we believe that academic success starts with a strong foundation in social-emotional development and positive behavior. Our school is proud to have earned Gold-Level Recognition from the California PBIS Coalition for three consecutive years, demonstrating our commitment to cultivating a school climate where all students feel safe, respected, and supported.

Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS)

Our PBIS program is a school-wide framework that promotes a safe and inclusive environment by teaching and reinforcing positive behaviors. Through PBIS, students are guided to be Safe, Respectful, and Responsible—values that shape both their learning and their relationships.

Key components of PBIS at Washington include:

  • Clear behavioral expectations taught and reinforced in every classroom

  • Positive recognition such as verbal praise and incentives for students who demonstrate expected behaviors

  • School-wide systems of support and interventions to address student needs early and consistently

Washington’s Behavioral Statement of Purpose

Our goal at Washington Elementary is to create a positive school climate that maximizes instructional time and supports the development of appropriate behavior. This ensures all students are ready to learn and thrive in a nurturing environment.

Social-Emotional Learning (SEL)

Social-emotional growth is just as important as academics. Our SEL program is designed to help students develop the emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills they need to be successful in school and in life.

Through structured lessons and real-life application, students learn to:

  • Understand and manage their emotions

  • Show empathy and kindness to others

  • Communicate effectively and resolve conflicts peacefully

  • Make responsible decisions

  • Build resilience and cope with challenges

SEL is integrated into daily classroom routines and supported by a dedicated team, including our Social-Emotional Learning Specialist, Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), and Community School Case Manager.

These professionals provide group and one-on-one support to address students’ emotional and behavioral needs with care and consistency.

Our combined focus on PBIS and SEL ensures that every child is emotionally supported, socially empowered, and academically prepared. By nurturing the whole child, we are creating a school where students love to learn, feel confident to grow, and are inspired to make a positive impact in their community.
